Return to Piton Vallue Project
Left to right: 1. Woman carrying water: carrying these 40 lb buckets is a daily occurrence for many women. 2. Current water source for the community of Piton Vallue. 3. Existing spring box at Piton Vallue's water source.
UPDATE: Phase 1 Completed!
In April 2011 C2C broke ground for the new water distribution system. A challenge since the main water source was dry due to the lack of rain for over seven months. C2C held meetings with the community to determine alternative locations of water and well digging options.
In August, during Hurricane Emily, C2C returned to Haïti to work with the community to:
build the spring box-captage of the Water System. Currently clean, natural, spring water is flowing at approximately 6 gallons per minute! The new location is also accessible to the entire community. Phase 1 completed!
complete the site layout and excavation plan for the foundation of the water tank. The community is very experienced, as well as willing and able, to perform excavations operations. With only hand tools, they used picks and shovels, and loaded five-gallon buckets to move 19 cubic meters of dirt in two days.
purchase building materials for the water tank. C2C and APHD, the community associatation, mobilized the community and worked with them to transport these materials to the water tank construction site. The community will continue construction i.e. placing the rebar and formwork followed by mixing and pouring concrete into the foundation.
C2C returns to Haïti in April 2012 to re-join the work the community began to complete Phase 2: building the water tank.
The Piton Vallue water project is currently being designed as a gravity fed water distribution system that will give clean water access to the residents of Piton. The terrain consists of numerous ridges, peaks and valleys, which make gathering water at the local springs a challenging and time consuming task. Near the source, C2C and the Piton community will build a pump house; complete with solar panels and batteries, that will pump water to a nearby mountain top. This mountain top will support a large water tank that will then distribute the water out to a series of kiosks. Residents will be expected to pay a small fee for their water, the revenue of which will then go to the Piton water board for system maintenance and long term development goals.
